Figured Bass: Practice Questions

Grade 7 Music Theory Figured Bass Practice Questions

On this page you'll find two questions of a similar level to those found in the ABRSM grade 7 music theory exam papers.

  • You should indicate suitable chords for the continuo part, at the places marked with an asterisk *.
  • Leave 5-3 chords blank, but figure all other chords as necessary.
  • If a 5-3 chord is used as part of a 6-4 5-3 progression, or has been altered chromatically, then it should be figured.
  • All suspended dissonances (suspensions) should be figured appropriately.

Begin by looking closely at the given melody and bass lines. Analyse the key (and any modulations), and try to sing through the parts in your head.

Look carefully at places where a cadence or suspension seems likely.

An audio button is provided, but it's better to attempt the question without listening beforehand. Listen after you have written your answers.

A suggested answer can be revealed by hovering your mouse over the staves (tap on mobile devices). Please note though, that there are many possible correct answers.
