Composing a Melody for Instruments
with Online Teacher Support
|
20 questions on Completing a Melody for Instruments, PLUS grading of your compositions by mymusictheory.
Each question provides you with the first bar or so of a melody, which you need to complete in 8 bars. A choice of two instruments (e.g. oboe & violin) is given, just like in the real Grade Five Music Theory exam, and you are given two lines of manuscript for your answers (with clef and key signature already printed). Ten melodies are in treble clef, and ten in bass clef.
Email your answers to us here at My Music Theory, we''ll mark them and grade them for you, then email them back to you with comments, corrections and a grade.

Cadences |
20 cadences. Suggesting cadences in melodies - includes manuscript and answers.
Each question asks you to name two cadential progressions which would be appropriate for the melody, just like the questions in the real Grade 5 Music Theory exam. Some cadences need two chords, while others need three.
The chords may be shown by either writing the Roman numeral for that chord (e.g. I, II, IV or V), or by writing the notes of the chords on the stave.
Each question provides you with blank manuscript for your answers, and complete answers (including both the notes on the stave and the chords in Roman numerals) are provided at the end of the worksheet.

Transposing |
Grade Five, 8 questions. A selection of transposing exercises, with and without key signatures, including blank manuscript, tips and answers.
Each question gives you a short extract written for a transposing instrument - the clarinet, trumpet or French horn, and the instructions tell you in which direction (up or down) and by how much (what interval) you need to transpose by, just like the questions in the real Grade 5 Music Theory exam.
Each question provides you with 2 lines of blank manuscript for your answers, and complete answers (including all dynamics and phrasing which you also need to copy out) are provided at the end of the worksheet.
With ten points at stake for a transposition, doing well in this question could make the difference between a merit and a distinction for you!
