How to use the lessons on My Music Theory
Content of the Courses
My Music Theory currently has complete courses available for Grade 1 and Grade 5 Theory of Music. (More grades coming soon - check out our blog for upates!)
The courses cover everything which is on the syllabus published by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).
The course for each grade contains several lessons, and each lesson has accompanying exercises which can be done online or printed off and used offline. You can also print off some blank music manuscript paper; you'll find a link on every page.
Use the menu links top left of this page to navigate to the lessons or exercises you need.
At the end of each course you'll find a complete practice exam for that grade. The practice exams are not real past papers but are the same format. You can buy real past papers here.
How to Use the Courses - all Grades
We suggest that you start at lesson 1 of your chosen grade, and work through the lessons in order. This is because the knowledge that you need is built up gradually. Read through lesson 1, then work through the exercises. When you feel ready, move on to lesson 2.
Grade Five Music Theory Students
If you are studying for the Grade Five Music Theory Exam but haven't really studied any theory before, don't worry! The Grade 5 course has been designed to be easy to understand and can be used without studying the earlier grades first, (although you can always check the tutorials for the earlier grades if you find something confusing!) You should be at least grade 4 standard on your instrument to study theory at this level.
If you have already studied quite a lot of theory, you might want to just revise certain topics. You can use the lesson menu on the left-hand side when you are in any grade.
Using the Exercises - all Grades
All the exercises are available in two formats - one for printing and one for web-use. You might prefer to print off the exercises to work through them with a pencil.The complete exercises for each grade are made as a printer friendly pdf document, in black and white and with blank staves for your answers, with no distracting adverts or menus on the page, and are available for instant download for a very small fee (currently £1). If you print off the exercises, you'll find the answers at the end of the booklet.
If you use the web version, you can reveal the answers (in most cases) by hovering your mouse over an image or word.
