Look at the following extract which has been adapted from a piece for piano and flute by Beethoven, and answer the questions below.

  1. Give the meaning of the dots above the notes in bars 1 and 2. (1 point)
  2. Explain mf in English (1 point)
  3. What key is the music in at the beginning? (2 points)
  4. What key does the extract end in (what does it modulate to)? (2 points)
  5. Transpose bar 7 of the flute part down by one semitone. Include the new key signature. (2 points)
  6. Name another instrument from the same family which could play the flute part without a change in pitch. (1 point)
  7. Fully describe (e.g. perfect 5th) the melodic intervals marked A, B and C. (3 points)
  8. Name one similarity and one difference between bars 3-4 and bars 5-6 in the flute part. (2 points)
  9. Name the ornament which occurs four times in this extract. (1 point)
